Description:
The commission is a 21-member group of professionals, people with disabilities, family members and others that advises the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. The commission advocates on behalf of children and adults with disabilities by identifying unmet needs, strengthening existing services, coordinating the development and implementation of new services and promoting community education about the needs of persons with disabilities. Members of the community-at-large and representatives from human service organizations are invited to participate on the Commission on Disabilities' standing committees. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Committee develops, prioritizes and monitors the county-wide ADA Plan, as well as advocates for improved access for people with disabilities. The Legislation and Advocacy Committee reviews and responds to proposed legislation and proposes legislation and policies which impact people with disabilities. The committee gathers information that assists the commission in its advocacy and community education functions. The Youth and Family Committee advocates for children and young adults, age 25 or under, with disabilities and their families in San Mateo County. The commission also promotes public awareness of the needs, concerns and abilities of people with disabilities through educational forums, written material, and the Commission's Web site, www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/portal/site/cod/ In addition to its standing committees, the Commission on Disabilities may establish ad hoc committees or task forces to address emergent issues not covered by its standing committees including a Joint Housing Committee that promotes the availability of affordable and accessible housing in San Mateo County.Location
