Description:Offers a literacy program to all English-speaking adults, age 16 or over, living in San Mateo County, who have a desire to learn to read and write better. The program aims to bring adult learners to a functional reading level (or to the level they need and desire for their daily living) and then to refer them to other educational resources in the community. Students are assigned an individual tutor-volunteer who has received 12 hours of instruction in teaching basic reading and writing. The tutor and student meet twice a week at the library or another site in the community. Small group instruction is also available at various sites. An on-going class is required for new adult learners while awaiting a tutor. Volunteer tutors are always needed.
